Fill out an Internship Application
Frequently Asked Questions
When are internships available with Lamb’s Players Theatre?
We accept applications all year long. What we have to offer varies, however, with the time of year. Assistant stage management positions, however, are more readily available.
How long are the internships?
Again, they vary with each individual, his or her interest and the project involved. Summer interns are with us about two months and usually work full-time during their time with us. Interns who work with us during the regular school year are often attending classes and working simultaneously. Their commitment is usually part-time and it fluctuates slightly with each project. We generally require a commitment of at least 110 hours for each internship experience. This allows us enough time for training and allows you, as an intern, enough opportunity to actually participate in a significant way.
Are your interns paid?
No. For the summer internship positions, we pay a small weekly stipend and assist our invited interns in finding local housing.
How old must you be to participate as an intern?
To hold an internship position with us, we expect that you have completed high school. Occasionally we accept a gifted high school student for specific projects where that student has demonstrated outstanding ability. Most of our interns, however, are college juniors and seniors – many are graduate students.
In what areas do you offer internships?
We offer internship positions in all areas of the professional working theatre except acting and directing. These include stage management, technical theatre, design, costumes, media and community relations, patron services, and special events.
Because of the unique way in which our company works, we are unable to offer internships in directing and acting. These positions are filled by staff and guest artists. Through the educational outreach programs and stage management positions, however, individuals can observe very closely our creative process in those fields.
What is the process for applying for an internship with Lamb's Players Theatre?
Complete the application on-line and submit two letters of reference. We prefer that one be a letter of recommendation of a more personal nature and the other be of a more professional nature. It is also helpful to have an updated personal resume.
Once we have received your application and letters of recommendation, we consider your application complete. We examine the dates of your availability and discuss among the supervisors what we have to offer during that time period. Sometimes we also prefer to speak with those who wrote letters of recommendation, so they should be aware they may also be called.
If there is a good match between your area of interest and our need (and if your references check out), we will offer you an internship and outline the parameters of your time with us – often a project or two. If this offer meets with your approval, we have an agreement and you have secured an internship position.
Is there anything I can do to increase my chances for an internship?
Plan ahead. We often decide our summer interns by the middle of the February preceding. Last minute applications rarely work out. If you are going to be visiting the San Diego area, call ahead or email us and try to arrange an interview. The more we know you, the better. And again, the more notice you can give us, the better.
Why should I seek an internship with Lamb's Players Theatre rather than an internship somewhere else?
Because an internship with Lamb's Players Theatre is more than busy work, more than making coffee, filing or running errands. Interns with us who demonstrate ability are given leadership opportunities while they work very closely with professionals in their fields. They leave with real hands-on experience and a first-hand understanding of how a very unique theatre company – ensemble-driven and community-based – operates. And each internship is different, designed specifically for that individual.
Do you have any apprentice-type programs beyond the internships?
Yes, but these openings are quite select. When an intern has demonstrated extraordinary skill in an area where we have particular need, we will invite that individual to return for a more intense working experience with us. Apprentices are paid a weekly stipend and are given significant positions of supervised responsibility.
One cannot, however, apply for an apprentice position; one must be invited.
